Can I be a school teacher in a foreign country ?

Yes, you can! There are many opportunities for native speaking English teachers to teach abroad and travel in Asia. Certified teachers who are interested in teaching EFL are encouraged to start the adventure while they can! K-12 public school license holders with any area or specialization are welcomed. Valid substitute teaching permits are acceptable by the local schools as well.

What's expected?

The market for teaching English in Taiwan has expanded over the years and teachers are currently in high demand. Most elementary students are proficient in English, including recitation of short sentences and basic vocabulary. English reading and writing curriculums are most often instructed by Taiwanese teachers, while foreign teachers focus on listening and speaking skills. 

Can I make a living by teaching?

The average salary for a public school foreign teacher in Taiwan is approximately $2,200-2,300 USD monthly, while the cost of living in Taiwan is around $700-900 USD (food, rent, transportation depending on how one spends income). Most public schools also provide round-trip airfare reimbursement, around $1300-2600 USD to encourage teachers with a limited budget. Most contracts for teaching in Taiwan is one academic year, composed of two school semesters.
